Necessary Components of an Information Technology Resume
Ensure that all contact information is accurate and you have a professional-looking email address, not a casual one that may appear awkward to someone that doesn’t know you.
Pretend that you are meeting a recruiter for the first time and they are giving you 30 seconds to make a pitch. Write a brief and succinct statement that demonstrates who you are with the goal of generating additional interest.
Information technology professionals should customize this section to emphasize skills that relate to or match with their targeted job.
Demonstrate your detailed work history. Emphasize experiences and accomplishments that also relate to or match your targeted job, but don’t leave out other important information that could add to your value proposition. Include measurable achievements. The IT resume examples have a sample measurable accomplishment.
Include all relevant training, certifications, degrees, etc. that will support your application.
4 Resume Don’ts
• Don’t include personal information that is not job-related, such as your picture, physical description, health status, hobbies, or similar information.
• Don’t emphasize experience older than 15 years since hiring managers will put more weight on your more recent experience. If you have older experience, just mention job title, dates worked, and company.
• Don’t lie on your resume or application. Based on the strength of current background checks, availability of information, and the potential that someone will likely set the record straight at some point in the future, save yourself the embarrassment and ensure that every piece of data on your resume is legitimate.
• Don’t make your resume longer than one page if possible, but business executives and academics may require additional pages.
